The Dallas Black Dance Theater presents Espresso Nutcracker at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas this coming December 9th!
In terms of choreography, the Espresso Nutcracker strays away lightly from the classical version. Not only does it incorporate Duke Ellington’s jazzy “Nutcracker Suite,” but it also combines traditional ballet movements with more contemporary ballet mixed with funk. The production is also shorter, running for about an hour in length.
“The Espresso Nutcracker even adds a new section to the traditional “divertissements” in the Land of the Sweets,” the Dallas Magazine shares. On top of the typical main cast of characters such as the Arabian Coffee, the Chinese Tea, and the Waltzing Flowers, the production spices it up with an additional trip to Africa, where they feature traditional West African choreography.
The Dallas Black Dance Theatre was popular for embracing innovation when it developed its first virtual format during the COVID-19 pandemic. Artistic Director Melissa M. Young discusses how the company thoroughly considered the restrictions and started developing a unique plan to address this. Furthermore, they became the first-ever professional dance company in the world to continuously present purchase-only virtual performances as a brand new business model after directly closing off live shows during the global COVID outbreak.
Following this, in their upcoming 45th season, the group will adopt a hybrid model, considering how their virtual performances during the previous seasons captured audiences' attention across the U.S. and twelve other countries. Executive Director Zenetta S. Drew shares in a recent interview that they are excited to deliver artistry directly to everyone’s homes.
Moving forward, they want to continue offering virtual options as a key part of their new business model to effectively grow their audience worldwide, especially for those who have never experienced the Espresso Nutcracker before.
First established as a vaudeville theater, the Majestic Theatre in Dallas is well-regarded today for hosting the best national performing arts events, concerts, and comedy acts that visit the area of Texas!
