From his beginnings in 1981 as the keyboardist for Higher Ground, where he penned multiple gospel hits for artists such as Sandi Patty, Kathy Troccoli, Bill Gaither, and Amy Grant, of which a large amount grew so popular that they ended up in church hymnals; to recording his first Grammy-nominated solo album, “The Michael W. Smith Project”, containing the hit single “Friends”, God knew exactly what was going to happen when He blessed Michael W. Smith with a wonderful talent. The road was open, and Michael W. Smith embraced it with both arms stretched out to the heavens in praise.
In 1990, Michael W. Smith released his first mainstream effort, “Go West Young Man" - mostly a secular album, but with a religious touch - with the major crossover single, “Place in This World”, peaking on the Billboard Hot 100 in 6th position.
